Farm Raised Butterfly Displays - Urania ripheus

Purchasing ethical farm raised butterflies is a way to support indigenous people and rain forests because they provide an economic incentive to protect butterfly habitat and allow indigenous people to remain on their land. These Butterflies are farm raised in the Amazon Rain forest, and are not killed but are collected when they die naturally. The display frames are produced by home based artisans in Lima Peru. The hand made wood frames feature a brass hangar and glass on both sides so you can see the top and underside of the butterfly. Each frame is labeled by biologists licensed by the US Fish and Wildlife Service with the scientific names of all the butterflies contained in it. Endangered butterflies are never used in these displays.

Urania ripheus the "Sunset Moth" is actually not a butterfly but is a very beautiful day flying moth and Native to Madagascar. The display makers in Peru trade South American butterfly species for these specimens.
There are a few differences between moths and butterflies; butterflies generally have a club at the end of their antennae and moths do not, moths usually form a cocoon around their pupae where butterflies have an exposed pupae (a chrysalis), and moths generally have thicker and furrier bodies than butterflies.
