By Barbara Massey & Dennis Vroman
The Rogue Valley in southwest Oregon has long been renowned for the beauty of its bucolic landscape, for fine theater and music festivals, for excellent restaurants, and more recently for its vineyards and wineries. Less well known, except to Oregonians, is that the valley and its surrounding mountains comprise a richly varied bird-watching area that hosts more than 300 avian species. This book introduces bird lovers to the region and gives detailed information on 20 easily visited sites in the valley and its surrounding mountains. Each site was visited monthly for two years or more to obtain data on avian distribution, occurrence, abundance and seasonality. One can choose to visit habitats that range from riparian corridors and grasslands on the valley floor, oak woodlands and mixed conifer-hardwoods forest at mid-range elevations, and montane forest hight on Mt. Ashland. A detailed introduction to the region and its geography, botany and birdlife is followed by chapters on the 20 sites, species accounts, breeding birds, rare species, owls, a plant list, and more.
